This is a short summary of categories to assist you in finding the products you are looking for.

Fruit and Vegetable Preparation Tools

Gardeners can spend a great deal of time and effort to grow and preserve their food supply.  Certain home canning accessories can cut that work to a fraction by mechanizing the food preparation process. Our cherry pitters, apple peelers, bean stringer, pea sheller, and sauce makers are examples of manual processing equipment that save time without the use of electricity. Some of the most important canning equipment is the tools we use to prepare the food before putting it in jars or the dehydrator.

Canners and Pressure Canners

Stocking up for winter was Grandma’s term for home canning the garden bounty. Home canning begins with a hot water bath canner or steam canner and a pressure canner. We have several canning kits which contain additional tools to make the process easier. Today a significant savings in the monthly food bill is often realized when food products are purchased “raw” or in bulk and processed at home, not to mention the health benefits from eliminating commercial preservatives.

Meat Grinders and Slicers

When most people think of meat processing, they think of a huge meat packing plant that deals with a hundred head of cattle a day. What about the homesteader, the small scale farmer or the hunter who raise and harvest some or all of the family’s meat? Our meat slicers and grinders perform like professional equipment, longer without overheating or need for sharpening. The frugal homemaker buys meat in a large quantity to enjoy the significant price per pound savings and prepares the cuts desired for the number of people in the family.  Meat processing also includes turning a large boneless ham into sliced lunch meat, and chuck roast into quality, low-fat ground beef. These tools are incredible time savers when making jerky as they produce uniform slices at the thickness you choose, to insure even drying through out the batch.

Dehydrators

Food dehydration is simply the process of removing water from food and is considered by many the easiest, cheapest, and the most appropriate method of food preservation. As with any method of home food preservation, you will save money, have more control over the quality of the food you eat, and experience the rewards of your own garden and other locally grown foods – Year Round. Further, you can create a food supply that does not require refrigeration or freezing (electricity) to maintain. The finished product can be stored in jars, zip lock bags, tins, buckets or vacuum sealed for longer term storage.
A drying temperature of 130 degrees F to 140 degrees F allows moisture to be removed quickly without adversely affecting food’s texture, color, flavor and nutritive value. We carry a variety of models to suit your particular needs. Most models have adjustable thermostats and are expandable. To determine which unit is right for you, remember that twelve square feet of drying space dries about a half-bushel of produce.  All of our dehydrators come with a one year warranty.

Long Term Food Storage

    Our food products packaged for long term storage carry a shelf life of up to 25 years with absolutely no rotation needed. Having a food storage program provides ease of mind knowing your family has enough food to be prepared for an emergency. We carry a huge selection of  dried food, vegetables, grains, pasta, beans, rice – all the foods you eat now! Available in cans or buckets , our food is low cost, tasty and perfect for long term storage.
It is important to keep in mind that not only do temperatures affect the shelf life of food products, temperature fluctuations affect shelf life too. Keeping your food stored at a constant temperature will help you achieve the maximum shelf life. Utilizing a cool, dry location, such as a basement or root cellar is the best practice to maximize the shelf life of your stored foods.
All of our food is packed in air tight, food grade cans or resealable buckets  with an oxygen absorber, leaving no detectable oxygen in the containers.
Dehydrated foods are the most cost effective and are usually ‘single ingredient’ foods that can be combined together and then cooked. Cooking requires rehydration in hot water (just like you do now with pasta, rice or beans). You can cook ingredients together, or individually and season to taste.
Each can is labeled with:
1) The ingredients;
2) The net weight of the food;
3) The serving size;
4) The number of servings per can;
5) Directions for preparation;
6) The nutritional facts per serving;
7) daily nutritional requirements based on a 2000 calorie diet; and
8) Calories per gram of fat, carbohydrates and protein.

Shipping on large orders is determined on an individual basis and the cost will be discussed prior to your order being processed.

Grain Mills

The ability to grind grain is a necessity in a long-term food storage program. Whole grains contain natural fiber, vitamins and minerals needed to maintain vibrant health. Now there’s a simple way to replace overly processed, vitamin deficient foods with the fresh, natural goodness of home-ground products.  Create an infinite variety of new textures and flavors in home baking, cereals, snacks, beverages and desserts with your own grain mill.
In the last decade, long-term food storage has gained a more widespread popularity, bringing attention to the storability (and versatility) of whole grains. I strongly recommend learning more about the different grains and recipes for them, before being in a position of depending on a storage program you are unfamiliar with. Homesteaders have plenty of stories to tell about “learning curves”. You can actually save money NOW on your monthly food bill, and anxiety later, by moving into the learning curve on your own time frame.

Water Filtration

It is not possible to tell whether water is of an appropriate quality by visual examination. Simple procedures such as boiling or the use of a household activated carbon filter are not sufficient for treating all the possible contaminants that may be present in water from an unknown source. From years of personal experience with both the Katadyn and Berkey products, we are confident in the consistent performance and are proud to carry these quality water filters.
Ceramic filters have a micro porous structure with impregnated silver which delays the growth of bacteria. The pore size of Katadyn ceramic filters is 0.2 micron (0.0002 mm). Bacteria range in size from 0.2  to 5 micron and like protozoa (1 15 micron), are efficiently filtered out. Ceramic filters can be mechanically regenerated and the filter capacity is measurable.
Activated carbon is used for its ability to reduce harmful organic and inorganic substances in the water. It removes unpleasant tastes, odors, chlorine, pesticides (such as lindane, DDT) and trihalomethanes (THMs). These substances adhere to the large surface area of the activated carbon. Activated carbon granulate cannot be regenerated.
Water filtration is critical is disaster situations to prevent illness and a long term food storage program is useless without enough clean water.
