Hermits Recipe

Recipe From the Great Depression

1/2 cup Butter
1 cup Sugar
2 Eggs
1/4 cup milk
2 cups Flour
1 teaspoon Baking Powder
1 teaspoon each Cloves, Allspice, Cinnamon
1 cup Raisins or dehydrated Cherries
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup of one; Nuts, Coconut or Shaved Chocolate

Cream butter, add sugar. Add well beaten eggs, then milk. Add sifted dry ingredients. Dredge fruit with flour and mix in gently. Drop by teaspoonfuls on greased tin. Bake in moderate oven 15 minutes.

Boiled Frosting
1 1/2 cups Sugar
1/2 cup Water
1 teaspoon Vinegar
2 Egg Whites
Flavoring

Boil until it threads 3 inches, then pour into beaten egg whites and beat until cool. Add flavoring. Frost cookies.
